A fun original film. A movie that's upsetting a lot of people and I think I know why. It's because there's not enough shirtless Ryan Gosling. I do find it a little ironic in a film about women empowerment that Ryan Gosling's performance as Ken stole the show. There were so many digs and jabs at how women are treated in the real world but because it was done in an entertaining manner it didn't feel like the audience was being lectured or made to feel like crap. It was more like, 'hey, look at all these funny jokes we have about how women are treated in society, they're funny, but seriously, let's fix that.'
Margot Robbie was brilliant as were the entire cast, Michael Cera's Alan was a great laugh but when it's all said and done, we aren't going to be talking about any of them. There's one performance from this film that's the talk of the town and that's that of Ryan Gosling. He was hilarious as the doofus loveable Ken trying to win over Barbie's love, being rejected over and over again, but making it his sole mission to just have Barbie look his direction and not towards any of the other Ken's.
It's not really a kids movie despite it being about Barbies and produced my Mattel, you won't be able to take your little daughters to the movie and have them understand what's going on, luckily for them the pastel colors and bright sets will have them distracted so you don't need to have any uncomfortable conversations on the way home.
It's an amazing movie, well written, up until the last ten to fifteen minutes of the film where it felt like they were padding for time and struggling to find a way to wrap it all up. But despite that, I have no shame is saying that I'm a Barbie girl in a Barbie world and that this will be one of the best films of 2023.
